Mount Desert Island is part of the rock-bound coast of Maine, home of the Acadia National Park - 40,000 acres of beauty that offers 50 miles of groomed carriage trails and over 125 miles of hiking and biking trails, not to mention lakes, streams and ponds.

Mount Desert Island has a year around population of about 10,000 and is home to the Jackson Laboratory, the largest employer and a leading genetics research facility in the country. Tourism continues to be one of the largest industries, but boat building, fishing and aquaculture are also a large part of the economy on MDI. College of the Atlantic, a four-year accredited college, is in Bar Harbor.
