Join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, February 19 at 4:00 pm
The Community Dental Center, the newest in Mount Desert Island Hospital’s network of area health centers, will open its doors Wednesday, February 19 in Southwest Harbor with a public ribbon cutting ceremony set for 4 p.m. The center is the first fully non-profit oral health facility on Mount Desert Island and will serve to increase access to affordable, quality dental health care to area residents.
While open to all, the center will have a special emphasis on increasing access to oral health services for underserved children. The center’s innovative school-linked oral health program, available to all area schools that choose to participate, will provide students on MDI and in surrounding areas with cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments and early childhood screenings on site at the child’s own school. All are invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new dental center at 4 Community Lane in Southwest Harbor at 4 p.m. Following the ribbon cutting, refreshments will be served inside the center. The center offers a sliding fee scale and accepts both MaineCare and private insurance. For more information or to make an appointment, call 244-2888.
To launch the Community Dental Center's effort to increase access to oral health care services for area children, MDI Hospital and the MDI YMCA will host the Island’s first-ever Give Kids a Smile Day, a day of free dental care, cleanings and education. Established in 2003 by the American Dental Association, Give Kids a Smile Day seeks to engage dentists across the country to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. The event, set for Friday, February 21, will be held at both the MDI YMCA and the new Community Dental Center, located adjacent to the Community Health Center in Southwest Harbor.
Children from first tooth to 5th grade will receive oral hygiene instruction, cleanings and fluoride varnish from registered dental hygienists at the MDI YMCA from 9 am to 12 pm. Children up to 18 years will receive oral hygiene instruction, cleanings, and fluoride varnish from registered dental hygienists with the possibility of further examination and treatment from a dentist at the Community Dental Center from 8 am to 12 p.m. Preregistration is required. To take advantage of this special event, please call 667-0293 to schedule your child’s appointment.
