Vicky Eaton, ED RN, coordinated a visit from news anchor Joy Hollowell of WABI TV to discuss the important issue of sexual assault and the SAFE/SANE program.
A Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) is a health care provider who has been specially trained to provide comprehensive care for the sexual assault patient, demonstrates competency in conducting a forensic exam, and has the ability to be a fact and/or expert witness in court. The majority of these providers are registered nurses with specialized training as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs).
Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants can and do train and function as Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs).
The feature drew RNs from St. Joseph Hospital, the Bar Harbor Police Department, the state coordinator for the SAFE/SANE program, and Jodi Leach from AHMC’s sexual assault services.
