Visitation

Mount Desert Island Hospital Visitation Policy serves to promote the therapeutic healing of our patients with visitation and support of family and friends. MDIH prohibits visitation discrimination based on age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression.

  1. Mount Desert Island Hospital has pre-defined visitation hours, 10:00am-7:00pm,  seven days a week. Families and other partners in care, identified by the patient are welcome 24 hours a day at patient request.
  2. MDIH reserves the right to restrict visitation during periods of high levels of community transmission, by other significantly increased medical risk, health care system strain or as declared by MDIH Senior Leadership.
  3. Nursing may limit or modify visitation in support of patient care (restrict visitation, number of visitors, or length of visit).
  4. MDIH may restrict visitation if the patient verbally or in writing states they do not wish to visit with the visitor.
  5. MDIH may restrict visitation if the hospital determines that the presence of the visitor might endanger the health or safety of the patient, staff or interfere with the primary operations of the hospital.

Procedure

  1. Visitors, including children must postpone their visit if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory symptoms, or any other communicable disease.
  2. All visitors should perform hand hygiene before entering and after leaving a patient room. Visitation to a patient on isolation precautions is permitted, but special requirements including personal protective equipment (PPE)use may be required.
  3. Children are welcome, but must be directly supervised by an adult (not the patient)  to ensure a safe and healing environment for all patients.
  4. Visitors should be conscientious about noise volume (television, music, voices, laughter, etc.) at all times.

Special Situations:

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department may limit visitation to 1 person due to the clinical nature of the department. Children are only permitted at the discretion of the ED Charge Nurse.

Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may limit visitors to 2, due to the critically complex care being provided. Children are only permitted at the discretion of the ICU Charge Nurse.

Obstetrics

All visitors to the OB department must ring the OB department using the white button located outside the department doors. Visitors will be granted access to the department by an OB Registered Nurse (RN) or their delegate only. No one exhibiting symptoms of illness (such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, or any other signs of infection) will be allowed access to the OB unit. This is to protect the health of our patients, newborns, and staff.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (not the patient) at all times during their visit to the OB department. The adult is responsible for the supervision and behavior of the children to maintain a calm and safe environment.
