Joseph Dougherty, MD

Doctor of Medicine

207.801.5300
MDI General Surgery

Care Philosophy: “Every patient deserves unique, individualized care that works for them and meets them in the places where they are ready and able to heal and grow. There is no cookie-cutter solution that works for everyone in all circumstances, and ultimately the patient is the captain of their own ship. My role is to serve as a guide and counselor to help each patient navigate their healthcare journey, providing them with the best current medical information and available options so they can decide what route is best for them; and once a plan is selected, to help them execute that vision effectively and efficiently. Some surgical needs are cut and dried, but many others are more nuanced, and I am here to help each patient arrive at the destination that is best for them on an individual basis.”

Joseph Dougherty, MD, specializes in general surgery, acute care, and trauma surgery. Having graduated from the UC Berkeley (BA) and the University of Michigan (MD), Dr. Dougherty is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. His medical interests include minimally invasive surgical solutions to challenging physical conditions; Surgical Acute Care with the goal of helping people navigate unexpected emergency conditions and return to their normal life; helping people achieve optimal healthy lifestyles through a holistic fusion of exercise, nutrition, and modern medical care.

“The human body is an incredible living machine that can give you a lifetime of joyful smooth service if well cared for and maintained,” says Dr. Dougherty. “Like any machine, it must be properly tuned, well fueled, and used often in order to stay in optimal operational condition. Sometimes the long miles take a toll and we all need some basic maintenance from time to time. Preventive care will help keep you running smoothly and avoid the major overhauls that could leave you rusting in the yard on blocks! Invest in your health: stay active, exercise often, don’t smoke, get proper rest and nutrition, and fix the little things before they become major issues – from gut health to weight loss to hernia repair to preventive screenings, we’re here to help keep you healthy. If you need help with any of those things, come and see me… let’s talk about your health goals and how to help you achieve them.”

Dr. Joseph Dougherty has received a number of awards, honors, achievements, memberships, committee seats, licenses and certifications. In just the last several years, Dr. Dougherty has achieved the following awards and honors:
1. The 2020 US DOD Humanitarian Service Medal for action in support of COVID19 response
2. The AVH Values Oak Leaf Recognition Program (5 times from 2018-2020) for exemplary patient care
3. The US Navy review board for promotion to O-5, Commander in 2019
4. The Navy commendation in 2018 for meritorious service during Operation Inherent Resolve deployment with Naval Expeditionary Medical Unit, selected by CJTF for cross assignment to forward deployed USAF Ground Surgical Team at Syrian border
5. Army Commendation Medal for service in support of 3rd Cav at Al Qaim, Iraq, in 2018

Care Philosophy: “I meet patients where they are and motivate them to become a better version of themselves.”

Laura’s health interests and expertise include exercise prescription, meal planning, portion control, accountability, dietary changes that improve quality of life with a chronic disease, goal setting, weight loss, smoking cessation, and stress management. She is a Certified Personal Trainer, a Certified Health Education Specialist, and a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).

I love being able to play a role in the improvement of someone’s health and quality of life – I can’t think of a better way to spend my time!”

The most common barrier Laura encounters is motivation. “More often than not, people find the accountability to the coach the most important component to achieving their health and wellness goals,” she says. “As coaches, we also help to build motivation by asking the right questions to uncover what underlying motivation can empower our clients, such as quality of life, family, etc.”

Laura provides her patients with individual support and specific tools to assist them in making changes to their lifestyles to improve their health and quality of life. To her, it’s about establishing a starting point and then taking small steps in the right direction. She finds that these small steps can add up to significant health benefits.

Prior to joining MDI Hospital, Laura worked as a Fitness Specialist in Bangor where she trained State of Maine employees. Outside of work, she enjoys running, hiking, paddle boarding, and traveling.

Lauren Manning, MD

Psychiatrist

207.288.8604
MDI Behavioral Health Center

Care Philosophy: Psychiatry creates a space to examine the human experience – which, for me, feels as fundamental and meaningful as it gets. It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to join patients in making sense of their experiences and finding inner resilience, accompanying them as they face their challenges and celebrating with them as they reach their goals.

Dr. Manning grew up visiting Maine in the summer from Glenmont, New York and always had a passion for the outdoors. After completing her undergraduate degree in Behavioral Neuroscience from Connecticut College, she enrolled in Tufts University School of Medicine where she chose to participate in the Maine Track Program. During her medical training, she completed a psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Maine Medical Center, and she says her experiences in this program only deepened her love for Maine.

After spending about eight years in Portland with her family, they decided they wanted to look into moving to a smaller community and decided on MDI. Dr. Manning accepted the role of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at MDI Hospital and was impressed by the patient-centered values that everyone held at the hospital.

While she began in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, in her current role with MDIH, she is also able to assist patients of all ages and has found that work very interesting and rewarding.

MDI Hospital

Care Philosophy: “I believe everyone is unique and knows what they need to do for their health. I support patients in obtaining lighter bodies and clear minds to thrive through daily habits. Coaching sessions address all of the four pillars of health: Eat Well, Move More, Stress Less and Sleep Well.  Together, we review healthy options and set achievable Action Plans. With evidence-based practice standards, we address motivation and roadblocks to success. I believe simple everyday shifts in behavior bring powerful lasting lifestyle change in real-time and at the patient’s own pace.”

Sarah O’Neil is a Certified Health Coach specializing in mindfulness education, yoga, meditation, and healthy kitchen routines. Her wellness interests and expertise include meeting people where they are, and the exploration of how daily routines, seasonal eating, intermittent movement, and attitude shape a person’s health and happiness. She also has a strong interest in brain health and neuroscience, new research on circadian code and clock genes, kitchen medicine, real food movements, and the science of habit change.

As a health coach, Sarah works with patients to make lifestyle and daily habits changes at their own pace. “Simple changes lead to powerful results. Studies show eighty percent of all chronic health issues are connected to diet and lifestyle. I enjoy working through the lens of better body and lifestyle habits with curiosity,” she says. It’s fun supporting people with their personal goals for health and wellness. A reoccurring theme in coaching is ‘I want to feel better, have more energy and look good.’ I love investigating these motivators as anchors in accountability for success.”

Sarah holds a Bachelor of University Studies in Health and Wellness, is a Certified Health Coach, a Mindful Life Coach and a Growth Mindset Coach. She is certified by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching.

As a naturalist who loves the ocean, MDI is a great fit for Sarah. Jane Ogembo, DDS, MPH

Dentist

207.244.2888
Community Dental Center

Care Philosophy: “To provide the highest standard of care to every patient that I serve. To impart oral health education to patients for improved outcome. To collaborate with dental specialists and physicians according to a patient’s specific needs. To continue taking dental courses in order to improve the services that I provide to my patients.”

Dr. Jane Ogembo is a dentist with a specialty in dental public health. Before she joined the Community Dental Center of Mount Desert Island Hospital, Dr. Ogembo served as the only dentist at St. Croix Regional Family Health Center in Princeton, a rural Maine community near the Canadian border. Having grown up in a small village in rural western Kenya, Dr. Ogembo understands how challenging it can be for residents in isolated areas to receive essential care, and in 2018, she applied for and received a grant from Maine Health Access Foundation towards developing and improving oral healthcare access for her patients at the St. Croix Regional Family Health Center.

Dr. Ogembo received her DDS from the New York University College of Dentistry, then attained an MPH degree from Boston University School of Public Health, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Dental Public Health from Boston University School of Dental Medicine. Having studied biology in college, she was inspired to pursue dentistry by a trip to the dentist at the age of 20. At that time, she had secured dental insurance through her job at a bank, and thus she found herself in a dentist’s chair–for the first time in her life. She discovered that her dentist was just as fascinated by her, as she was by him. They discussed what she might do with her college degree, and he suggested that with her interest in biology, she might consider becoming a dentist. That formative experience led her to a career devoted to patients who, like her, may not have had access to oral healthcare because of financial or geographic circumstances. As a member of the American Dental Association and the American Public Dental Health Association, she enjoys participating in their work to advance the profession and improve dental services to the public.

Dr. Ogembo joined the Community Dental Center in November 2019. “I came to MDI Hospital to take care of the oral health needs of the communities that it serves,” she explains. “My interest is to collaborate with other primary care providers to improve the health outcomes of our patients, and to expand quality dental services to all patients regardless of their ability to pay.  All children should have a dental home so that good oral health habits are developed as early as possible.”

In her free time, Dr. Ogembo says, “I am an active member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and am currently involved in helping a small rural community in western Kenya build Mlimani Adventist Church at Ringa, in Homa Bay County.” She enjoys traveling and has visited interesting places in the USA, Europe, Middle East,  Africa and the Caribbean Islands.

In a recent interview with Pine Tree Watch, a journalism website, Dr. Ogembo discussed her work on a personal level–harkening back to the origins of her own distinguished career: “In the process of interaction, you learn who I am. I learn who you are,” she said. “It’s a wonderful learning curve. It is important to me to make a difference, whether it is small or fundamental in the lives of people, especially those who are in need. I strive to be someone who is empathetic, who wants to understand people and the particular situation they are in.”

Rebekah Villarreal, MD

Psychiatrist

207.288.8604
MDI Behavioral Health Center

Care Philosophy: “I like to think my health care philosophy adapts and grows the more I learn from experience, education, and patients. At the core though, is the value of listening. Patients have a lot of wisdom, unique to each individual. I strive to listen for that wisdom and help a patient recognize and appreciate their own wisdom about their health and mind. I hope to help them find and hone the tools and skills they need to build a meaningful and fulfilling life for themselves.”

Dr. Villarreal specializes in psychiatry. Her medical interests and expertise include the practice of psychotherapy in both individual and group settings as well as the treatment of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. “I am a big proponent of psychotherapy and am always curious about new ways of engaging with people, both individually and in group settings,” says Dr. Villarreal. “I spent two years as a resident learning more about group psychodynamic psychotherapy and find it a powerful modality for change.” Dr. Villarreal earned her medical degree and completed her post-graduate residency at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. During her residency, she received the 2019 Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Award and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching by House Staff. She also received the University of Pennsylvania’s PGY2 Medical Student Teaching Award in 2017.

She first came to Mount Desert Island for a two-week elective rotation in rural psychiatry at the MDI Behavioral Health Center, available to Penn Medicine residents through a partnership with MDI Hospital. In those two weeks, she found something here that she wasn’t expecting. “There was a real sense of community here that I hadn’t realized I was missing,” says Dr. Villarreal. “Like in Philadelphia, providers were working hard for patients, doing their best, facing challenges daily, but here on MDI, I noticed that the providers felt more connected to the people they cared for because they shared the same island, the same restaurants, the same national park, even the same lobster pounds.”

Outside of work, Dr. Villarreal and her husband are avid travelers and look forward to globe-hopping as much as they can. They are excited that Maine offers so much to see and explore and are already busy planning trips around the state. Art is also something that they actively seek out, and you can often find them visiting galleries and museums throughout the year. Hiking and swimming are favorites for Dr. Villarreal as well, and she enjoys reading and crafting when time allows. Now that her residency is completed, she’s hoping to take up knitting and crocheting again, perhaps have the time to finish a few novels or even get a loom and explore weaving. She’s also hoping to find an opportunity to try horseback riding again, which is one of her favorite activities.
