Diabetes Education

The Care You Need, Close to Home.

The Diabetes Education Program at Mount Desert Island Hospital provides comprehensive education and one-on-one support to help you manage and prevent diabetes. As affiliates of Maine’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, our program has achieved recognition from the American Diabetes Association for meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education.

Our educators are available by appointment and are willing to work with you to find a time and location that will be convenient for you. Appointments are available at MDI Hospital as well as at the Trenton Health Center and the Community Health Center in Southwest Harbor. A referral by your primary care provider is required to participate in the education program, but feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to assist you in obtaining a referral and answering any questions you may have.

Diabetes Prevention Program

Mount Desert Island Hospital also offers free, community-based diabetes prevention classes through our Diabetes Prevention Program. No referral is needed to participate. By following the program, participants can lose 7-10 percent of their body weight and lower their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.
