Emergency Department

Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Emergency Department, supported by an active collaboration with Penn Medicine, is available 24/7. We are a critical link in Downeast Maine’s trauma delivery system, working closely with Lifeflight of Maine to aid in the timely transfer of critically ill and injured patients.

Our ED team is led by David Sugerman, MD. Dr. Sugerman is a board-certified emergency physician who also has a background in sports medicine. Dr. Sugerman is joined by a skilled team of emergency room nurses, physician assistants and a full-time Hospitalist. Orthopedic and general surgeons are on staff should the need arise. In-house diagnostic imaging, laboratory and pharmacy, and a 25-bed inpatient facility with Intensive Care and Skilled Rehabilitation Units all support MDI Hospital’s emergency medical services.

In recent years, life-saving new technologies have been brought to MDI Hospital through our collaborative program with Penn Medicine, one of the nation’s largest, most renowned providers of emergency medicine. In many cases, these technologies were innovated by our Penn Med partners. Throughout each summer, as our Island enters its busiest tourist season, four teams (each with a physician, resident, and RN) travel from Penn Med to our Hospital for two-week rotations in the ED. Working side-by-side with MDI Hospital’s skilled staff, they enhance our delivery of care while experiencing the day-to-day caregiving of a rural community hospital that is ranked as one of the nation’s best.
