Ophthalmologic Surgery

​Timber Gorman, MD, offers ophthalmologic surgery at Mount Desert Island Hospital. Dr. Gorman is a Board certified medical and surgical ophthalmologist. She has practiced in Hancock and Washington Counties since 1996, following her residency in Boston. Dr. Gorman performs a wide range of surgical procedures including small incision, no-stitch cataract surgery using standard as well as premium implant lenses.

MDI Hospital has state-of-the-art ophthalmological equipment that is not available in any other facility in eastern Maine.

In addition to cataract surgery, Dr. Gorman also performs a variety of eyelid procedures, laser surgery, and treats various diseases of the eye, including glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and macula degeneration.

Dr. Gorman owns and practices at Downeast Eye M.D. in Trenton, Maine. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, New England Ophthalmological Society, Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Maine Medical Society.

George Shafranov, MD provides care at MDI Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department in the Northeast Harbor Clinic, located in Northeast Harbor. Dr. Shafranov’s specialty lies in ophthalmology with his medical interests including glaucoma diagnostics and management, and complex cataract surgery.

Dr. Shafranov has served as an investigator for major national studies: Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS), and Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS), lectured as an Invited speaker for various national and international ophthalmology meetings, and co-authored “Shields’ Textbook of Glaucoma”, 5th edition, among many other notable honors and professional experiences.

Dr. Shafranov came to MDI because of his love for Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Outside of work, he enjoys photography, traveling, hiking, books, technology, psychology, many other interests.
