Dr. Shafranov is a board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist who has a wide range of previous clinical and academic experience over the last 35 years. Delivering care at MDI Hospital’s Northeast Harbor Clinic, he brings a high level of care to the community. He held a position at Yale as an associate clinical professor, directing the glaucoma section and glaucoma fellowship at the Dept. of Ophthalmology. More recently he comes to MDI Hospital from EMMC Northern Light in Bangor.

George Shafranov, MD provides care at MDI Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department in the Northeast Harbor Clinic, located in Northeast Harbor. Dr. Shafranov’s specialty lies in ophthalmology with his medical interests including glaucoma diagnostics and management, and complex cataract surgery.
Dr. Shafranov has served as an investigator for major national studies: Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS), and Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS), lectured as an Invited speaker for various national and international ophthalmology meetings, and co-authored “Shields’ Textbook of Glaucoma”, 5th edition, among many other notable honors and professional experiences.
Dr. Shafranov came to MDI because of his love for Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Outside of work, he enjoys photography, traveling, hiking, books, technology, psychology, many other interests.
